Supporting Wellness in St Lucia: One Farm and One Meal at a time

Khadija Patel

At the end of May 2025, Dr Madhuvanti Murphy (or Maddy as we call her) and I had the opportunity to travel to St. Lucia to engage directly with local FarmHers who are a part of the Helen’s Daughters community. Over two days, we connected with inspiring women who are not only cultivating the land but also nurturing their communities through sustainable practices and nutritional knowledge

Day 1: Meeting the Farmers

The first stop was a hillside farm, run by a dedicated mother of two who grows a range of crops, with dasheen being the most dominant. In addition to her thriving crop production, she also manages a chicken layer operation. Her passion for agriculture is deeply rooted in her daily life, and it’s clear that she pours love and effort into everything she grows. Her story is a testament to resilience—balancing motherhood and farming with unwavering determination.

The second farm we visited was set on flat land and radiated a serene charm, thanks in part to a gentle river that runs alongside it. This farmer, one of sixteen siblings, grew up learning the art of farming through her family and later through the support of Helen’s Daughters. Despite limited formal education, she has developed a flourishing farm filled with herbs, vegetables, and fruits. She now shares her knowledge and love for the land by hosting farm tours for tourists, offering them a unique window into St. Lucian agricultural life.

What stood out most about both women was not only their commitment to farming but their deep understanding of the nutritional value of what they grow. They spoke confidently about how their produce supports wellness—from boosting immunity to improving digestion—and it was clear they see food as more than just sustenance; but as a tool for health.

Day 2: A Taste of Community at the Farmers Market

On the second day, the team attended the Helen’s Daughters bi-monthly farmers market, where 30 stalls showcased a diverse array of locally grown goods and handmade products. We were excited to see that 18 of these vendors had signed up to be part of our ongoing intervention—a strong indicator of community interest and engagement.

One of the highlights of the day was a cooking demonstration led by a local vegan chef, owner of Grassroot Vegan Cuisine. He prepared three nutritious, plant-based dishes using ingredients sourced directly from the farmers at the market. His presentation was not only interactive and engaging, but also deeply educational. As he cooked, he shared insights into the health benefits of each ingredient, connecting the dots between local agriculture, food, and well-being.

Reflections

This site visit was a reminder of the strength and knowledge that exists within local communities. From hillside plots to peaceful riverside farms, these women are leaders in sustainable agriculture, driven by tradition, community, and a profound respect for the land. Their efforts, along with initiatives like the farmers market and cooking demos, are planting seeds of wellness that extend far beyond their fields.

We’re excited to continue working alongside these changemakers and supporting their efforts to nourish both people and the planet.
